How to Setup Smart SEO

Setting up Smart SEO is easy, it just takes a few clicks to integrate it in your Shopify store:

If Smart SEO is not integrated, on the homepage, you should see a status "Not integrated
". Click the Setup button:

This will take you to the Setup page of Smart SEO, where all you have to do is to click the Integrate button

It takes a couple of seconds and if the integration is successful, you should see the following screen:

This means that Smart SEO is integrated properly in your store and you may start using our features for improving the SEO performance of your store. At the bottom of this article, you will find useful links that will guide you on how to use all our features.

Common issues during the integration of Smart SEO

1. Store is password protected

If your store is password protected, you will see the following screen:

All you have to do is to provide the preview password for your Shopify store and click the UPDATE PASSWORD. Then, you will be able to integrate Smart SEO.

If you don't remember the password for previewing your store, you can find it under Online Store -> Preferences in your Shopify administration:

Password protection

2. Invalid HTML markup in theme.liquid

In some cases, you might have invalid HTML code in your theme.liquid file. For, example, a missing <head> tag for your store. This might happen since a lot of third-party apps make changes to the theme.liquid file or you might have accidentally deleted this when adding custom code to your theme.liquid file. In such cases, during the integration of Smart SEO, you might see the following screen:

Invalid HTML during integration

Even though the integration is complete, it is recommended to contact us for support. Our system would have already reported this to us and we will soon contact you by email to notify you about this issue and provide you with assistance with resolving this. We will have a look at your theme.liquid file to find the origin of this issue by looking for invalid HTML, resolve the issue and then integrate Smart SEO for you, by making sure it works as expected.

3. Duplicated <title> tags

Another common issue that might occur during the automatic integration is when the integration is successful, but a duplicated <title> tags issue occur. You won't see an error in this case, but our system will detect this and will report it to us. Again, we will notify you about this by email about this and will provide you with assistance on resolving the issue. We will only need collaborator access to your store and you won't have to deal with any HTML/Liquid code yourself.

The reason for this issue is that our app, during the automatic integration, adds our own <title> and <meta name="description"> tags to your store, just like other third-party SEO apps. We also look for the same tags that come by default in order to disable them, by commenting them out in your code. This makes them inactive and allows Smart SEO to re-activate them if you decide to remove the integration of Smart SEO, in case you no longer wish to use it in the future. Due to the fact that all themes have different structure, this automatic process might fail to locate the <title> that is coming from your theme by default.
